Enkamat®

Enkamat J

Enkamat J is an open structured standard Enkamat on which a biodegradable fabric has been stitched. Enkamat J fully protects dry slopes from severe erosion risks due to wind and water, even when vegetation is still developing.

Standard Enkamat reaches its highest level of erosion protection once vegetation has fully developed. Thanks to its open structure Enkamat provides ideal conditions for vegetation to take root. Of course, the rate of growth depends on the local climate, but usually vegetation is fully developed within three to four months.

Sometimes high impact erosion risks such as heavy rainfall or flooding are expected within the first three to four months after installation. For these particular circumstances, Enkamat J has been developed. Its biodegradable fabric, such as jute, has enough density to withstand severe hydraulic loadings, minimizing their erosive effects. The biodegradable fabric also retains water and functions as a thermal blanket – both further enhancing conditions for seeds to germinate.

Once it has fully developed, the vegetation and mat alone provide all necessary protection. The biodegradable backing, which no longer serves a purpose, degrades and returns to nature while the Enkamat structure embedded into the soil remains intact providing long term reinforcement for vegetative roots.

Enkamat J is a flexible lightweight geocomposite, consisting of a 4 m wide three dimensional polyamide grip layer and a biodegradable fabric firmly stitched together. The biodegradable fabric extends on one side of the grip layer. This ensures that the joint is covered when strips of Enkamat J are laid side by side.

When laid with its biodegradable fabric uppermost, Enkamat J must be pinned down well. The topsoil should be prepared and friable to enable good contact and engagement between the soil and the Enkamat structure. Depending on local circumstances, there may be situations in which it is preferable to lay Enkamat J with its biodegradable fabric face down; in these cases, Enkamat should be hydroseeded or filled with soil and seeds.
